About Metcalfe

Metcalfe is a population centre in Osgoode Ward, in the rural south end of Ottawa. Before amalgamation in 2001 it was part of Osgoode Township. Wikipedia says the village serves largely as a residential community for the City of Ottawa, and the local agricultural fair, the Metcalfe Fair, has been held each fall since 1856. Along 8th Line Road are two elementary schools, a high school, the community centre and arena, the curling club and a library branch. In the 2021 census the ONS Metcalfe area had 5,785 people, and 88.3% of households owned their home.

Boundaries

The ONS 'Metcalfe' area is a rural part of Ottawa's south end centred on the village of Metcalfe in Osgoode Ward. Its centre is at about 45.231° N, 75.455° W. Wikipedia's 2016 census population of 1,776 refers to the village population centre only, so it differs from the larger ONS area figure of 5,785 for 2021.

Homes

The ONS Metcalfe area is mostly single-detached houses: 93.2% of dwellings in the 2021 census, with 1.9% semi-detached, 0.7% row houses, 1.6% duplex flats and 3.0% apartments in buildings under five storeys. How Metcalfe came to be

  1. 1827

    Colonel Archibald Macdonell, believed by some to be the first settler in Osgoode Township, settled just south of the current location of Metcalfe in March 1827. en.wikipedia.org
