What is the history of Metcalfe, Ontario?
Short answer
Colonel Archibald Macdonell, believed by some to be the first settler in Osgoode Township, settled just south of Metcalfe in March 1827. The village was first called Hawley's Corners and was renamed Metcalfe in 1877 for Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, Governor General of Canada from 1843 to 1846.
As of · Updated
Metcalfe was a stop on the stagecoach route from Bytown (Ottawa) to Cornwall. The railways bypassed it, which limited its growth. By 1866 it was a post village of 250 people.
